Elsie Locke

Elsie Locke c.1936

Elsie Locke (* 17. August 1912 in Waiuku als Elsie Violet Farrelly; † 8. April 2001 in Christchurch) war eine neuseeländische Schriftstellerin, Feministin und Sozialaktivistin.

Elsie Locke studierte und graduierte an der University of Auckland. Diese Zeit ihres Lebens wird in ihrem Buch „Student at the gates“ dargestellt.

Zusammen mit Rod Donald gründete sie die Avon Loop Planning Association (ALPA) und engagierte sich in der Entwicklung des historischen Wohngebietes Avon Loop im zentralen Christchurch. Sie führte außerdem Kampagnen für ein ausgewogeneres Verständnis der neuseeländischen Geschichte.

Sie erhielt 1987 von der University of Canterbury den Ehrendoktor als Doctor of Letters. Der nach Locke benannte Elsie Locke Award der Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa wird jährlich für eine „herausragende Veröffentlichung für junge Erwachsene“ vergeben.

Sie hatte vier Kinder, darunter der grüne Parlamentsabgeordnete Keith Locke und der Aktivist Maire Leadbetter.
